A Cosa Servono Le Testnet Di Ethereum: Ropsten, Kovan, Rinkeby e Goerli

La distribuzione di una piattaforma direttamente sulla mainnet di Ethereum senza le opportune prove su una testnet sarebbe estremamente avventata. Ovviamente questo discorso non vale solo per Ethereum ma per qualsiasi mainnet però in questo articolo illustrerò le (poche) differenze tra le varie testnet su Ethereum. Ricordo che esistono faucet che permettono di avere Ethereum gratis, ovviamente per evitare attacchi spam ed un uso non consono allo scopo della testnet, la distribuzione è limitata ed avviene spesso tramite social network (affinchè non sia possibile fare il claim più volte e con multipli indirizzi). Come posso usarle? Basta switchare nel mio Metamask e passare ad una di queste testnet.
Dopo di che, tramite una faucet, posso avere Ethereum gratuito incollando il mio indirizzo ed iniziare i vari test sulle piattaforme e dapps che le supportano.


ROPSTEN
La rete di test Ropsten venne creata nel novembre 2016 e prende il nome da una stazione della metropolitana di Stoccolma. Questa è considerata la testnet più strettamente correlata alla mainnet. Il protocollo di consenso è Proof of Work (lo stesso originario della mainnet di Ethereum) ed Ether può essere minato o richiesto da un faucet (Ropsten Faucet). Utilizzando il Proof Of Work, la rete è vulnerabile agli attacchi DDOS e nel febbraio 2017 è stata attaccata causando l'arresto della rete. Poi è stata ripristinata. Supporta sia i client Geth che Parity. Visto che si tratta di una risorsa che può essere minata, a questo punto ci si potrebbe chiedere: se un numero sufficiente di persone estraggono Ropsten Eth a scopo di test, la difficoltà aumenterà insieme al costo di generazione di monete testnet. Dunque perché il valore di questi token non dovrebbe aumentare in base alla domanda/offerta? In primo luogo, la testnet può essere ripristinata in qualsiasi momento dagli sviluppatori di Ethereum emettendo un nuovo blocco di genesi predefinito. Questo vuol dire che i nuovi nodi eseguiranno automaticamente la nuova testnet. Pertanto è impossibile costruire un business su di esso. Anche i minatori preferiscono la mainnet a causa del potenziale ripristino, quindi la testnet rimarrà sempre un ambiente solo di test in quanto insicuro. L'altro motivo è che Eth è praticamente infinito. Il blocco genesi Morden (questa è l'originaria testnet di Ropsten, andata incontro poi ad un fork il 20 novembre 2016) alloca un indirizzo con 1.6e42 Ether (1.606.938.044.258.990.300.000.000.0000.000.000.000.000). Inoltre alcuni sviluppatori di Ethereum conoscono la chiave privata di questo indirizzo. 


KOVAN
Creato dal team Parity nel marzo 2017, prende il nome da una stazione della metropolitana di Singapore. A differenza della mainnet di Ethereum, che utilizza un algoritmo di consenso Proof Of Work (PoW) e dal 2022 Proof Of Stake (PoS), Kovan utilizza Proof Of Authority (PoA) che è simile ad un PoS. La fornitura di Ether è controllata da parti fidate e può essere ottenuta tramite faucet (Kovan Faucet). Per questo motivo la rete è immune agli attacchi DDOS. Parity è anche un client Ethereum scritto nel linguaggio di programmazione Rust.


RINKEBY
Creato dall'Ethereum Foundation nell'aprile 2017, prende il nome da una stazione della metropolitana di Stoccolma. Come Kovan, utilizza un algoritmo Proof of Authority, non è vulnerabile agli attacchi DDOS ed Ether si ottiene tramite un faucet (Faucet Rinkeby o Faucet Metamask). La rete supporta solo Geth, un client Ethereum scritto in Go.

GOERLI
Creato dal team Parity nel novembre 2018 e il suo nome è ispirato alla stazione della metropolitana in questione a Berlino. Anche questa è un Proof of Authority come tutti i testnet che abbiamo trattato finora. Il supporto per più client include Geth, Parity e alcuni altri client meno popolari. Tuttavia è un po' più instabile rispetto alle altre testnet. Qui trovi delle faucet: Faucet Goerl Maudit e Goerli Faucet
